All the organisms listed, except the oak tree, are involved in some way in the breakdown and recycling of dead organic matter. Worms and woodlice are detritivores that eat dead plant and animal matter and so mince it into much smaller pieces that emerge in their faeces. The micro-organisms, fungi and bacteria, perform the chemical decomposition of relatively indigestible substances such as cellulose and lignin.
